Rona the Ribibiter: Using Travel to inspire Quilters out of their comfort zones and come alive!

Ready or Not, Here we Go!

Around this time of year most of us take a look back and come up with a list of things we want to change in the coming year (and hopefully beyond). In past years I’ve mostly focused on physical things like my weight. I need to get into the gym more. I need to change my eating habits, etc… This year I’m going in a whole new direction. In fact, I’ve already started.

A few weeks ago I realized that I had been spending entirely too much time on social media. More importantly, I was focusing on what other people in my profession were doing. How successful they are, how fabulous their designs are, how much better at this job they are than me, how more professional they are than me, how I’ll never be as good as them… see the pattern? Yeah, I did too.

Not this year! I’ve sworn off focusing on what other people are doing and only going to focus on what I AM DOING. The great thing about the business world is there is always room for more. More ideas. More faces. More creativity. More YOU and ME. I am my own person with my own interests and my own talents. Why am I comparing myself and my work to someone (or many someone’s) who have completely different interests and talents than my own? They are successful by utilizing their own talents. I can be successful utilizing mine.

Everyone has doubts. Everyone has fears. The best thing we can do in this life is do our best to quiet those doubts and fears and push on! Focus on what you love. Don’t focus on what you love about someone else’s work, what do you love about YOUR work? About YOUR creativity? A raven doesn’t compare his life to a hummingbird.

Once I forced myself to stop looking every day at what other people were doing, I was amazed at how much more productive I became. Instead of feeling depressed with zero energy, I started waking up with more of a purpose. I’ve even started sleeping better! Who knew?

So, welcome 2019! This year truly will be MY year! Now, if I can only stop thinking about how 1999 felt like 2 years ago rather than 20….
