You’re One Stop Quilt Shop in Boone, NC

Located in a little shopping center just off of Hwy 421 in Boone, NC you will find a ‘one stop quilt shop’ called Sew Original.
Operating since 2003 in generally the same location, Sew Original quilt shop also has a sister store in Winston-Salem. Together, they are owned by the lovely Melinda Rose and Shirley Bailey. On my visit to the North Carolina mountains I decided to stop in and have a look around. And, oh boy was I glad I did.
Manager Kathy Hill greeted me with a warm ‘hello’ and we struck up a conversation about all the amazing things offered at this fabulous store.

One Stop Quilt Shop
When I say this is a ‘one stop quilt shop’, I do mean that in the most literal sense. Here is just a taste of what all Sew Original offers:
- Bernina and Burnettes
- Sew Perfect Tables and cabinets
- Kimberbell shop (with events and exclusives)
- Classes
- Notions, patterns and fabric
- Machine repair (all brands)
- Longarm rentals
- And more!

Helping the Community
I was sew excited to learn about all the ways Sew Original quilt shop participates in their local community in and around Boone, NC.
As everyone was dealing with the affects of COVID, Sew Original was classified as ‘essential’ due to all the mask making going on. So, they were able to open their doors, roll up their sleeves and get to work.
Setting up a program working with the local Quilt Guilds, the quilt shop was able to help quilters get the supplies they needed to pump out thousands of masks for donation. In fact, Kathy told me about one customer that was selling her masks and had raised $25,000 for charity!
And, if your Quilting Bee is planning a retreat up in the mountains, if you let the ladies at Sew Original quilt shop know in advance, they may just have some special coupons just for you!

Classes at Sew Original
Honestly, just about every class you can imagine is offered at Sew Original quilt shop. Seriously, everything from beginner quilting to garments and more. Here’s just a small list of the many classes offered!

Quilts of Valor participant
Earlier in my visit up to the NC mountains I ran into a lady at Horn in the West whose mother had just participated in a demonstration at Sew Original. As it turns out, the presenter was Andrew Lee, the Combat Quilter!

I was able to see Andrew’s famous quilt at Fall Quilt Market in 2019. It truly is special quilt! If you are unfamiliar, Andrew Lee is a combat veteran who uses quilting as therapy. He also travels the country speaking about his life and how the quilting world has changed his life for the better.
Recently, Sew Original announced their participation with the amazing group Quilts of Valor. As the wife of a combat veteran, this group is near and dear to my heart. So, be on the lookout for their quilt block drives at the shop!

While in Boone, NC
As with all the quilt shops I visit, I always ask what are some things to do and see in their area. After all, no one knows the towns better than the locals!
As for the town of Boone, one of the best things to do is take an “old fashioned stroll” through downtown. They have fabulous ‘Sunday afternoon’ shopping and delicious restaurants!
Another great place to check out is just up the hill from downtown called ‘Horn in the West.’

It’s a lovely walk through history in the Appalachian mountains with actual cabins dating back to the late 1700’s as well as period actors giving you a glimpse of what life was like way back ‘in the day’. Oh, and be on the lookout for their AMAZING loom!
If you’re headed up to the North Carolina mountains for the day, a week or a retreat, be sure to stop in and say hello to the ladies of Sew Original in Boone! This shop is sure to have anything you’re looking for. And, maybe a few things you didn’t know you needed.
