Not just a Quilt Shop… but Sew much more!
About 150 miles east of Reno, Nevada along Interstate 80 lies a gem of a town with a rich history and more importantly, a quilt shop! I present to you the Mad Hatter Quilt Shoppe.
This amazing little quilt shop in the middle of this historical town did not actually start out as a full-service quilt shop. In fact, it began as a screen-printing shop. The owner, Patty’s mother-in-law actually named the shop the Mad Hatter because they would do so many hats!
Screen printing led to embroidery and finally the quilting fabric arrived in 2016 when the local quilt in town closed. Seeing as how Patty was a quilter and sewist, you can imagine how well she took the news that the only local quilt shop in town was closing. So, she decided to bring the fabric to her.
What does the Mad Hatter offer?
Today, the Mad Hatter Quilt Shoppe is still a family run business that still does screen printing, embroidery, classes, is a Bernina dealer, machine servicing and more! Some of the classes the shop hosts are:
- Judy Niemeyer once a month (2-day class)
- Bags
- Wallets
- Various quilting and sewing projects.
As if all that wasn’t enough, this little family quilt shop also hosts an annual retreat in the nearby town of Lovelock, Nevada. And coming soon, Patty is working with a newly renovated historical home in town to begin hosting a second annual quilt retreat!
Why come to Winnemucca?
If the Mad Hatter Quilt Shoppe wasn’t enough to bring you out to Winnemucca, the historical aspects of this town might and other quilting events around the area might very well do it for you.
The nearby town of Ely, Nevada does not have a quilt shop. However, they do host a ‘small’ quilt show every year. There are no vendors at this show (aside from Patty and the Mad Hatter) but, as Patty explains, “These 30 ladies put up about 300 quilts every year!”
While in town also be sure to stop by the local Humboldt Museum. First, they have an amazing 1857 Wilcox & Gibbs sewing machine on display. But, more importantly, they tell the story of the Basque people that have made Northern Nevada their home. In fact, Patty and her family are Basque as well!
And if you’re ready for a great meal, Patty recommends breakfast at the Griddle. They serve a great “all American” menu. And for dinner be sure to check out the Martin hotel for their traditional Basque cuisine! Plus, you’ll be supporting the local economy as both locations are locally owned and operated.
