Welcome to North Carolina!
With its rich history in Quilting and textiles, North Carolina has something for just about every quilter’s needs.
Beginning around the 17th century, European women of some affluence brought quilting to the United States and the Carolina’s. At that time the fabrics used in making quilts (chintz and broderie perse) were imported and quite expensive. Plus, the wealthy women of the age had plenty of time on their hands. In fact, quilting was used to show off their wealth.*
Throughout the history of the state, quilting has played a rather prominent role. From the women of wealth to the enslaved to the first cotton gin in (now) Alamance county. In fact, that first gin owned by Edwin Holt produced the very first manufactured pattern fabric known as ‘Alamance Plaid’.*
From humble beginnings to the now 80+ quilt shops, 101 quilt Guilds/Groups and the largest number of Quilt Trails in the United States, North Carolina is a destination for every quilter!
Some points of interest not to be missed:
- Jaunt around the greater Asheville mountain area including Maggie Valley and the Biltmore Estate
- Shelton House in Waynesville
- Mint Museum in Charlotte – Uptown and Randolph
- Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte
- North Carolina Museum of History (they have a fabulous quilt collection!)
- Drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway
- Blue Ridge Heritage Craft Trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway
