The Palmetto State
Welcome to South Carolina!
Beginning around the 17th century, European women of some affluence brought quilting to the United States and the Carolina’s. At that time the fabrics used in making quilts (chintz and broderie perse) were imported and quite expensive. Plus, the wealthy women of the age had plenty of time on their hands. In fact, quilting was used to show off their wealth.*
One quilting technique made popular in Charleston during the early days was English style paper piecing or ‘mosaic patchwork.’ Many of these quilts have survived even to today.
From humble beginnings to the now 26 quilt shops and 38 quilt Guilds/Groups, South Carolina is a not so hidden gem waiting for your visit!
Some points of interest not to be missed:
- Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail – Over 140 Barn quilts spread throughout Anderson, Oconee, Pickens and Greenville Counties.
- The Charleston Museum – one of the largest Quilt collections in the Southeast!
- McKissick Museum in Columbia
