Located in Chamberlain, South Dakota, just up the hill from the Missouri River, stands the magnificent, one-of-a-kind Dignity, of Earth & Sky statue. She is an incredible and honored addition to the South Dakota Art & Culture Trail, standing alongside her fellow SD icons such as Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial!

I am a huge supporter of arts and history. But when they come together in a single place, you KNOW I’m heading that way. This was especially true when I first heard about the Dignity Statue in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

And this last summer, I finally got to check her off my Bucket List!

    Chamberlain, South Dakota

Located alongside the Missouri River sits the small town of Chamberlain. If you blink, you’ll miss it. However, what this town lacks in size, it more than makes up for in beauty and a rich history!

Upon crossing the Missouri river, I highly suggest first stopping for a visit to the Dignity Statue and the Lewis & Clark Welcome Center and Rest area! Don’t worry. They’re all in one place. 🙂

Not only will standing at the feet of Dignity blow you away, but there’s a TON of great information inside the welcome center next door. It’s full of information about the entire region and it’s discovery.

Next, travel one exit back and you’ll reach the town of Chamberlain. I honestly wish we could have stayed longer in this little town. The sunset views on the river were jaw dropping! That, and the quilt shop was already closed for the day.

Chamberlain was named after Selah Chamberlain, a railroad director of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway, as it was established by European Americans in relation to construction of the railroad.[8][9] The city is called “earth dwelling” in Lakota.[10]

I mentioned history, yes? Chamberlain is not only home to the Akta Lakota Museum (a MUST visit!) but also the South Dakota Hall of Fame. There you’ll get to meet both famous and infamous South Dakotans who’ve left their mark on history!
